Making Cat food - SarahK - 02-08-2010 My book finally came! I got Lapping it up by Patricia O'Grady. I made my first batch of cat food on Sunday and started gradually introducing it to the kittens diet. So far so good, they seem to love it and no toileting probles either, so I'm happy with that. But I'm worried about their taurine intake. I have a tub of taurine powder and each recipe batch calls for 100mg - how do I measure 100mg? I only have a regular kitchen scales and at the moment I can't afford to buy a super sensitive one. Can they have too much taurine? RE: Making Cat food - Twitchin Kitten - 02-08-2010 They can have too much. Ask your vet how to obtain some kind of measuring device for it. Maybe there is an equivalent in a measuring spoon? RE: Making Cat food - Twitchin Kitten - 02-09-2010 hey Sarah, will this help? http://www.thinkgeek.com/homeoffice/kitchen/a7b1/ RE: Making Cat food - SarahK - 02-10-2010 Yeah that looks pretty good - will have a look around and see if I can find it locally before I order one. RE: Making Cat food - webzdebs - 02-10-2010 that sounds like a great idea! Would love to read the book, learn a few bits and bobs. I currently make my rat and mouse food mix and am looking into making gerbil and hamster mixes too, it's just so much better to know exactly what they are eating isn't it? RE: Making Cat food - Twitchin Kitten - 02-10-2010 http://www.twitchinkitten.com/showthread.php?tid=456 Debbie, post #8 I have a few links on books for making cat food. Just do an Amazon.com search and you'll come up with a whole bunch of them. Check that thread for more links, I stopped at that post but I think I posted more links either there or someplace else. Sarah should be able to help too for links. RE: Making Cat food - SarahK - 02-10-2010 I actually ordered my books through an Aussie company, but they have alot on Amazon aswell. I chose that particular book because it has alot of recipes, as well as nutritional advice. I was thinking - my scales only registers a min of 1gram, but it does have decimals on it - so presumably, if I just put something heavier on first, I should still be able to measure 0.1g, right? I have to get batteries and do some experiments! |
