Gear Head Question - Twitchin Kitten - 08-19-2015 OK you all know that eventually I'm putting a cold air kit in the Mustang. I also mentioned that throwing in a turbo charger would be cool. He said you can't have both. OK so WHY? And Why does this car not have turbo chargers? RE: Gear Head Question - Biker Dude - 08-19-2015 You can do both. Depends on what it has now if a CAI is actually an intelligent investment or not. A lot of vehicles already have them. My truck pulls from behind the headlight, an aftermarket CAI only serves to lighten your wallet. As to turbos, is there a kit made anywhere for this? If not, is's a full custom job and not worth the $$$. What about a supercharger? I would think this would be easier to do. Plenty of companies make kits for older Mustangs, I just have never looked for newer ones. Problem, well not really a problem but people don't think about it, is that you will have to upgrade a lot of other stuff. New fuel pump to deliver the higher required fuel rate. Larger injectors to squirt it in. Probably an improved exhaust system to get rid of the waste. All of that is above and beyond the say $4k a ProCharger kit costs. Then the tune. ANYTHING can be done with enough money. I'll post a vid to the old '72 Nova running twin superchargers making 1200 HP that still looks like your grand moms car if you want. RE: Gear Head Question - Twitchin Kitten - 08-19-2015 Yeah I thought he was incorrect on that. I'm toying around with ideas on what to do with this bit by bit. The car is a keeper and over time we're hoping to not be using it as our daily ride and tweak it and customize etc. Want to get new "cans" for it anyway and make it loud, so if the exhaust has to be upgraded in the process, so be it. The intake on my car is behind the headlight too. Stupid thing looks like a rat trap with very few holes in it. I don't see how it gets enough to gulp down. RE: Gear Head Question - Twitchin Kitten - 08-19-2015 Jesus the kits alone are more expensive than your guess! http://www.americanmuscle.com/search?keywords=turbocharger%20mustang&page=1&Generation=2010-2014&Subcategory=Turbocharger%20Kits&VehicleType=Mustang RE: Gear Head Question - Biker Dude - 08-19-2015 If I was you I would seriously consider supercharging over turbos. Try www.sumitracing.com RE: Gear Head Question - Twitchin Kitten - 08-19-2015 the pricing is still pretty steep. http://www.summitracing.com/search/year/2014/make/ford/model/mustang?keyword=supercharger been doing some research - just a tiny bit - and it seems everyone says turbo over super. Why do you say super over turbo? RE: Gear Head Question - Biker Dude - 08-19-2015 You could do one cheaper if you wanted. You go turbo, exhaust will have to be redone. Supercharger you could use what you have longer. Supercharger is more adjustable. Want less boost? Use a larger pulley. Turbo you aren't changing the turbo, just change the waste gate and dump more. I don't like turbo lag. V8 will have it. Specially with where those turbos are mounted. Supercharger doesn't. Prefer the sound. That SC is $1k under what the bottom turbo kit you posted was. Never heard anybody say turbo over sc. It's buyers choice. I would expect to spend $3k on support systems than either of those kits. Just a few reasons. RE: Gear Head Question - AnthonyG - 08-20-2015 Turbochargers pull more air into the engine by spinning a turbine from engine exhaust and have "lag" at the front end but once reaching their proper rpm's provide consistent power and torque. Superchargers run off a pulley from the engine and have great front end power and torque but dies off in top end. That is why the new thing is super turbo setup's like volvo did it with a smaller engine and was able to put a 4 cylinder engine in a car that normally used a small v8 or large v6. Turbo setups are best when they are designed for the car and car is made around them. In your case your best route is a supercharger like biker said its cheaper and can be tuned quite a bit and will get you alot of "off the line" power and the engines natural displacement will carry itself on top end. If you try to do a turbo setup between parts and labor you will be half the cost of your car, not worth it for the mediocre performance difference over a supercharger. A supercharger will bring your engine 30-50% more power and bring you close to 600 hp your car doesn't have a launch controller so you will barely be able to handle that much power as it is. As far as CAI I would look and see if its worth even doing it most claim 20hp+ gains etc but there is very little solid data in it being a good move some cars have shit designed intakes and it benefits to get added air flow but your intake was optimally designed by Fords engineers because the mustang regardless of trim line is a performance car. RE: Gear Head Question - Twitchin Kitten - 08-20-2015 Thanks guys. Now it makes more sense to me. This is a relatively far into the future project for us so all the info ahead of time so we can plan is good. RE: Gear Head Question - Biker Dude - 08-20-2015 Volumetric efficiency on a supercharger can flatten out at higher rpm's. I don't know that I would say drop off. And at those engine speeds a sc will be adding a great deal of heat to the air/fuel charge, which in and of itself is bad. If you want to spin an engine to those rpm's, that ford v8 would not be an ideal choice. (Just think what those piston speeds are!!) TK, in the end, anything can be done with enough $$. Only you can decide what your wallet can support. I personally know one guy that has dumped a ton of money into this mod, but he also upgraded brakes, practically race tires on new wheels, suspension etc. I personally think taking a new ecoboost Mustang and upgrading those turbos could be a lot of fun. Either that or that new flat crank v8...damn! |
