After 16 years........ - LKTraz - 12-07-2014 The gas range has started to develop a problem in the oven. I gave it a really good cleaning (took out the bottom plate to get to the burner itself) and it's doing better but I still don't entirely trust it. On Thanksgiving day it wouldn't build up to temperature so I had to get creative and use the broiler section then manually turn it on and off to make the giant assed (31 lb) turkey. I looked into the replacement temperature regulator which I'm rather sure is the problem and holy fuckstick.......it's $198.00 for the part! No way in hell was I going to spend that much on a damned part for a 16 year old range. Up to now it's been an excellent range and its more than paid for itself. I bought it new when I bought the house. I figured that after 16 years of heavy use it deserves to have a problem. Since it's that old I decided to shop for a new range. At the same time (unbeknownst to me) my mortgage company was adjusting my escrow account. The previous mortgage holders were way overcharging me and there was a surplus. By law every year they are supposed to adjust and anything over $50.00 in excess must be refunded to me. Yeah...it was over $50.00. How about $1902.22! I figured on replacing the range at tax time but with this check arriving the time was NOW. I looked at several nice ones and counted on between $750 and $1100. I found one that lists for $1100 but it was on SUPER SALE at Lowe's. Nice 5 burner 5.8 cu ft convection oven model from Samsung. Regular price $1099.00.....sale price $649.00 delivered. Called my local store and they had ONE in stock so I had them put a hold on it for me till I could get out there later in the day. They had no open delivery slots for yesterday so I have to wait till next Saturday for it. (Big fat hairy deal considering the price!) This thing is full featured and I can hardly wait to fire it up! http://www.lowes.com/pd_617237-149-NX58H5600SS_0__?productId=50201531&N=0&catalogId=10051&langId=-1 Christmas dinner just got lots easier for me!!!!! RE: After 16 years........ - twisteroo - 12-07-2014 Our oven once sat dormant so long that a mouse was stealing cat food from Julie's bowl and made a nest and cat food storage area in the insulation surrounding the oven part of the stove. That being said, I'm still jealous, that looks like a hell of a stove. RE: After 16 years........ - Twitchin Kitten - 12-07-2014 That is a nice stove, LK. I prefer a range like that instead of the wall over / cooktop situation I have. RE: After 16 years........ - BarEdul - 12-08-2014 Hee hee.. I have as you been crazy nuts and the holidays are coming.. Our stove quiting was LIKE an understament On Thanksgiving day we broiled our Turkey sigh, had to take the rest RIGHT away and boil it down so it would not go to waste! I was disgusted with the timing. I had been wishing for a 5 burner stove for forever, Not that mine had previously been broken BUT that I wanted to have one. Our old stove at 16 years has 4 fully functional top burners and the replacement part for the oven was a whopping $198 so 1/3 of this awesome Lowes PRICE! So choosing this fully LOADED and Rick and I sat researching every available range and options mentioned for two hours the sunday before we bought this! We found all the options made sure we understood anything new. How about Sabbath mode? Hmm had to look that one up seems it can hold at consisitent temp for 6 hours straight so that the food will be considered KOSHER. It also has dehydrate, Hold warm for 3 hours and auto shut off if you forget its in there. It has timed auto bake shut off and broil with a storage drawer. The convection oven is designed to make gas consumption better. It will give quicker more even cooking temps and it has a Pizza function making sure that you have a crisp bottom and moist top! Interesting. The brand is Samsung. Back in Agust my Washer took a crap so.. disguststed I went hunting for a decent washer. Yes I ended up at aarons for this. When I bought the washer and I figured might as well get a washer/dryer set I was like HMM Okay and LK said up grade to a better set. OMG it's worth every penny it too is a samsung. Leading up to this stove. I haven't even touched it and I am cumming in my pants the griddle burner and the 5th burner 7 position oven rack system has me so excited just to make cookies LOL and IT HAS a 12 hour bread function.. COME ON DOES IT HAVE hands to do my flipping? How about a massage button? WOW! whoo hooo! Oh I forgot the quick boil of course adjustable two .. count them two 17,000 btu burners... No more 10 minute time wait for boiling water thus reducing time in the kitchen. RE: After 16 years........ - LKTraz - 12-08-2014 I wanted to upgrade considering all the cooking we do and for that price it was an "OH HELL YEAH" decision. I'm hoping that this one treats us a well as the last one. The old one will get cleaned and wrapped up then go to the basement for storage. I'm sure if I look around I can find that regulator for a reasonable price or adapt one that will work from a similar model. I wouldn't mind paying $50 for the part but $200 was just a bit much. Future plans for the basement include finishing part of it and a full bar/lounge/man cave are the goal. I wanted to put in a 2 burner range top but even if I can't fully fix the oven the old range will do the job just fine. The burners on the current one are 12,000 BTUs. The new one has a 15,000 and a 17,000 in the front. That will reduce cooking times by bringing things to a boil more quickly. With the continuous grate and center burner using larger stock pots will be better when we make feed an army sized batches of soup as we often do. Pretty sure the even heat of the convection oven will reduce cooking time too so we'll have to adjust a little but quicker cooking times is a definite plus. I'll post pics once it's in and we get to try it out. RE: After 16 years........ - Biker Dude - 12-08-2014 Was that price form a factory repair outlet? Around here we have http://www.appliancefactory.com/ , I have bought a lot from them. When I worked for the housing authority we had an account... RE: After 16 years........ - LKTraz - 12-08-2014 The old range is a discontinued model and parts are kinda scarce.....hence they want a horse's ass for it. I just need to cross reference similar models and then adapt a less expensive part. If I can't find one.......fuck it. Won't really need the oven for the bar, just the stovetop burners. RE: After 16 years........ - Trouble - 12-08-2014 Jealous.... I started the process of remodeling our kitchen (had some plans drawn up etc.) but I've sort of put it on hold until after the holidays. I currently have an ELECTRIC stove top. I hate that piece of shit and can't wait to switch over to gas. I'm not looking forward to the several months of torture the remodel will entail but it's going to be hella nice when it's done. I'm going to get a sweet refrigerator too. I haven't picked a brand/model but I want one with a pull out freezer on the bottom with drawers. I get a little wet thinking about new appliances. RE: After 16 years........ - Twitchin Kitten - 12-08-2014 Those are nice 'fridges. I have a big side by side I bought 13 years ago and I don't think it's ever going to die. Kenmore. You can't kill them. Funny you want gas. I want to switch back to electric! I'd love a nice glass top that doesn't get all nasty when you cook and become hell when you try to clean up. And OMG am I ever sorry I bought white! One of those induction cook tops would be awesome. RE: After 16 years........ - LKTraz - 12-08-2014 That fridge is really close to the one I was looking at. The world's best chefs use gas for a reason.......precise heat control. |
