So sad. If you feel like giving, please do. It's a good cause.

That's Africa for you.

I thought there was a world wide ban on poaching of elephant and rhino tusks. And I thought it has pretty much brought this to a halt.

Does this mean the UN is pretty much ineffectual, and all just a big lie?

You're only just realizing that? Wink

That's why they still call it illegal poaching. Why not just donate some money instead of bitching? I did.

Nick Brandt has dedicated himself to his cause and does a lot of good. I have corresponded with him on many occasions and he will personally write back without an uppity attitude. Genuine nice guy and he deserves a donation.

Don't want to send a donation? How about spending a bit more and buy his book? All proceeds go to his foundation and you get a collection of some of the most stunning photography of African animals I've ever seen.

This story just wrenched my heart reading it. I don't think we should fuck up this by politicizing the the thing, just help instead.

RE: Three Generations Wiped Out - John L - 11-13-2012

My point was that there is supposed to be an international law at the 'demand' side, that makes the purchase/use of elephant/rino ivory a crime. It was signed and approved by even PRC, where most of the ivory carving is being done. Once the law took effect, the pile of illegal ivory impounded was tremendous. And it was supposed to have stopped almost all of the poaching. If there is no market for the goods, why poach in the first place?

I remember several years ago where the powers that be were blowing their horns, proclaiming poaching to be all but dried up. Where did they all go wrong?

RE: Three Generations Wiped Out - Twitchin Kitten - 11-13-2012

I know what your point is. There are also laws on preventing murder and that still happens. You can even say there is a demand for it if you want to twist the thing around to include hits for hire. Your argument is weak.

Just send money and help the cause instead of whining that some political function doesn't work. It's obvious it's not working.

Twitch's point here is that since the U.N. is obviously ineffectual then let's support those who ARE putting an honest effort toward the problem.

Yeah, but my ENTIRE point was not to politicize this thread. This isn't about politics - if anyone took time to notice it's in the ADVOCACY forum.

Sometimes life can continue without politics.
