If Operating Systems Ran The Airlines... - ralgith - 12-10-2011 I got quite this kick out of this http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=linux Wrote:UNIX Airways Its just too true as well. But everyone that I've successfully swayed into spending 2 weeks test driving Linux has switched to it permanently for everything except gaming. Which is true for me as well. RE: If Operating Systems Ran The Airlines... - Biker Dude - 12-10-2011 I'm a total noob in these things, so why not for gaming? It's important as I play WoW. Linux cant run windows programs for the most part. It's important as I play WoW. You left off an important piece here: However, most software has Linux alternatives. Its just the games & Quickbooks that I've been unable to replace on Linux. And even many games I play directly on Linux because of CrossOver. RE: If Operating Systems Ran The Airlines... - John L - 12-11-2011 What flavour are using right now? Fedora 16 for Desktops & Laptops, and CentOS 6 for the server that we had the site on for a couple of weeks. RE: If Operating Systems Ran The Airlines... - John L - 12-12-2011 I keep promising myself that I am going to make the official switch, but remain lazy. Shame on me. what do you like about the Red Hat folks over the rest of the field? Shame on me. Stability combined with ease of use. I can give it to someone who knows nothing about Linux and they can use it comfortably. Don't get me wrong, I like other flavors as well: Fedora, CentOS, RHEL, Gentoo, Debian, Arch, Mint, Slackware (First linux I ever experienced was a shell account on a Slack server), Knoppix, OpenSUSE, Damn Small Linux, and Mandriva. A few years ago I would have taken Mandriva over any of them, however... almost exactly two years ago they lost their top 5 or 6 developers. Since then they've tanked a lot. Its still good, but if I go back I'll go to Mageia, a Mandriva fork. RE: If Operating Systems Ran The Airlines... - John L - 12-15-2011 I'm definitely going to give one a go. Since Opera(I am an Opera person) also is set up for Linux, I shouldn't have any real trouble making the switch. You run the OS from the CD without installing or changing any files on your computer. It lets you take a test drive of the software without damaging an existing & working system. The ones that I know for sure have a LiveCD version are: Fedora, Mandriva, Mageia, CentOS, and DSL (Damn Small Linux). Others may have it as well, I think the CD for Mint is a LiveCD, but it doesn't specifically say that it is.
