Seriously - I thought when you came to this country you were supposed to become an American and embrace American traditions. Sure, you can keep your own ethnicity's holidays and what not, but to stop kids from one of the BEST holidays out there and designed specifically for them, well that's just wrong.
The below is from some blog on the 'net but there are plenty of other links if you use Google. I saw this on the CBS afternoon news last week and kept forgetting to post it here.

Buckman Arts Elementary School in Portland, Oregon has banned Halloween costumes. Here is the first of three related announcements in our principal’s newsletter…
For many reasons, the celebration of Halloween at school can lead to student exclusion. There are social, financial and cultural differences among our families that we must respect. The spirit of equity has lead most PPS (Portland Public Schools) schools, including most elementary schools, to deemphasize the celebration of Halloween at school. <---WTF?
Apparently it was discussed with the staff and members of the equity team (I’ve never heard of this team – who are its members? how were they chosen? what is their function?) as well as many parents and local principals, and these select few concluded that it’s better to encourage more inclusive celebrations. Hmm. See, last year when Halloween got canceled we were told it was because it conflicted with Grandparents/Special Friends Day. Rather than lead my family into its first act of civil disobedience I yielded to the administration as to avoid discord with guests on campus.
This year some friends and I attempted to bring back Halloween costumes. We petitioned for friendly, low-maintenance costumes without masks or weapons. No offense, but the current incarnation of Halloween is primarily celebrated as a secular holiday. It’s more about candy than anything else. But we weren’t petitioning for candy. We weren’t even petitioning for parties. We only want the children at our arts school to be able to express themselves with costumes if they choose to do so. Had the administration said costumes were distracting, the teachers hated it, it was too much work, I probably wouldn’t be making a federal case out of this. But the stream of utter nonsense they’ve laid before us is impossible to ignore. If Halloween is celebrated there are up to six children (out of nearly five hundred) who’s families will not allow them to attend school that day. We’re told these families don’t recognize this as a secular holiday nor does the school district. So let’s run with that, shall we? Halloween: a sacred holiday.
If certain students wore religious head-coverings to school they wouldn’t be sent home. If other students wore black smudges on their foreheads a certain Wednesday of the year they wouldn’t be sent home either. The school system is claiming that this is a non-secular, non-inclusive holiday. Subsequently, Halloween goes the way of Christmas, with Valentine’s Day close behind (oy, the stress of writing all those obnoxiously tiny Valentine’s Day cards – I hate it, but I wouldn’t do away with it when so many people enjoy the ritual).
So now a large group of us must make a choice: stand by our beliefs, letting our children wear costumes to school and risk being sent home or skip school all together and head to the pumpkin patch thus lowering our school’s very important attendance record? To further complicate the matter, a local news station wants to hear our story. Talk or quietly let it go? All this over America’s most creative holiday as it pertains to, of all places, an art school. This country’s obsession with the politically correct is really getting out of hand.

Changing the rules, holidays, behavior on holiday, how we say a greeting for a holiday (Merry Christmas) just because people may come from another country is so wrong it makes my head explode.
People come to America to be Americans and if we tell them it's not ok to be American but stay like you were in your shit hole of a depressed country, what's the point of the whole country's existence? We're founded on immigrants who adapt to our way because they come here for something better.
I don't see how people are letting "authority" get away with this shit. If you click the link and read some of the blog posts, some parents are talking about doing something about it. I just hope they follow through because more holidays are approaching.

Some one needs to point out that we have adopted the American enthusiasm for Halloween here in the UK. So if we are dressing up and knocking on doors shouting Trick Or Treat (and not understanding the meaning) then I'm damn sure Americans should too, just to show us the way!
I had a 'Pumpkin' (age 4 )helping me at the Guinea pig rescue on Tuesday and saw a Sikh witch (about age 6) in the supermarket tonight, someone explain that?

Fucking rainbows and unicorns liberal ass clowns! They stress that we should "celebrate our differences" and then stifle that when anyone besides gays or muslims do it!
Gee...who else did that shit? Um...oh I got it! The German National Socialist party (but the preferred folks were not the gays and muslims) did that. So did the followers of political revolutionary Vladimir Ilyich Lenin. Now we all know that neither of those scenarios played out well.
Oh wait.....the lefties in America IDOLIZE Mr Lenin and his muse Karl Marx. As well they think that Che Guevara was a hero and Cuba has the best health care!
Fucking nimrods don't give a shit about what others think or TRUE diversity. Just what THEY deem it to be and the rest of us will just have to go along with it. FUCK THEM! Send the kids to school dressed up like Halloween ALL YEAR and call it freedom of expression and artistic expression. Let's see them argue with that since it's one of the things they scream themselves!

It's a friggin' art school too. How do you have the nerve to suppress artistic expression like that? I added a comment as a guest and told them to send the kids dressed up and picket the damn school on general principal.

I certainly wish they had banned Halloween years ago. That particular day is my birthday, and without it I wouldn't have to get any older.
If only they had done that about twenty-five years ago,...............Sigh.
