The ultimate NHS indignity: Body of hospital patient left to die in corridor is ignored for hours... before staff simply drag him away <-- click to read the story - LOTS of pictures!

'He went to them for help and they left him out in the corridor to die', says Peter Thompson's daughter
Senior nurse claims it was 'the appropriate method of handling the situation'

Nurses casually stepped over a patient as he lay dying on a hospital floor.

Peter Thompson, 41, was left in a corridor for ten hours before someone noticed he had passed away.

In a final act of indignity, hospital auxiliaries pulled his lifeless body across the floor in a manner his family described as like ‘dragging a dead animal’...

Hmmm Manchester..................No1 city for drug and alcohol related incidents.

It's still no excuse for that kind of treatment. You don't treat someone like they're not even there when they come in for help then let them rot in the hall after they're dead and treat their body like garbage.

They thought he was sleeping and if the hospital is filled with drunk/doped up people this doesn't surprise me. Resources are thin.

Welcome to our healthcare system via Obamacare because this WILL happen here with socialized medicine.

RE: Left in the Hall To Die - Twitchin Kitten - 06-10-2011

All the more reason to at the very least, stick two fingers against his neck every few minutes to see if he's sleeping or alive. Regardless if they are over crowded or under staffed, knowing that these are junkies and drunks pose more of a risk they could die waiting around.

I thought the only people who'll be dying with Obamacare would be old people? Rofl

There is no excuse WHATSOEVER for ignoring and stepping over a patient regardless of the point that he/she may simply be drunk/high.

As Twitch said, at the very least check them to see that they still have a pulse once every 30 or so minutes!

They could at least have put him on a litter in the hall rather than just let him "sleep it off" on the floor. What a total lack of respect for basic human dignity!

Resources spread thin? GREAT system this socialized medicine....now isn't it?

RE: Left in the Hall To Die - Twitchin Kitten - 06-10-2011

It's not necessarily a problem of socialized medicine because over crowding and under-staffing is a problem in many of our own hospitals in poor communities.

RE: Left in the Hall To Die - LKTraz - 06-10-2011

That's true.

I do think though that incidents such as this one though could be more common when you breed a mentality of entitlement where folks will go to the hospital for every little thing thereby aggravating the excessive patient load. As well with specifically limited funds increasing staff to meet the level of demand suffers.

It's a snake eating it's own tail.

Could incidents like this happen in a non-socialized system? Sure. I merely fear the frequency of them growing.
