to my horror... - BarEdul - 12-28-2010

You all now know about Rufus...

I just spent weeks searching for the perfect puppy. I wanted Rufus to meet me. To know who I was and for me to know him. I didn't want to get a box with a unknown problem in it and go okay lets see what the magic dog person sent me. So I combed the threads papers and internet for all the information about breeders, shelters, santuaries, and owners.

I was horrified at some of the things I found.

1s I found great breeders who were so protective of their animals that you had to have almost (an FBI check to get one) and not to mention 2000 dollars to adopt. BUT then you didn't have to go meet the animal they picked one out happily dropped it in a box and shipped.. HUH That's confusing.. you have to have a credit check but no home check? Confused.. Then I found shelters that did all of the above but they didn't do an animal abuse reputation check? again confused... Then I found a shelter that would let you adopt an animal for 75 dollars and would deliver it to you by shipping with NONE of the checks at all from Florida to anywhere as long as you had enough land and less than 8 dogs and told them so? Okay again confused. There is no consistancy.

Now am I NOT here to debate this not really, I want to rant .. What I was horrified about is what the state of what americans are doing and what is happening to our farm and other farms in our area. The shelters are overwhelmed. Some of them I saw had over 400-1200 animals.. and some are being closed and are having to be rescued themselves as they have not enough food or money to stay open.

Worse yet so called owners let their once loved pets starve before they go to a shelter and surrender. NOW I have had animals that got a damn nasty case of worms and over night got awful skinny but I have never starved an animal. I have come back from vacation and nearly killed a so called pet sitter. But I have never starved an animal due to lack of money.

My question is what the fuck is wrong with these people? Oh I can eat but I can't give you scraps... I can eat but I can't see your ribs sticking out? What moral failure happened to make them so bone headed as to realize that if you love them you put them somewhere where they can find safety and food.?

I can run away from my house and abandon it but I can't be damned to take the time to abandon you at a shelter? But if I leave you tied to the house to starve you will be okay? What the fuck? I stumbled across the case of a great dane starved to 75 lbs! 75 fucking lbs they eat like a cup of food a day! Holy shit! drives me bonkers.. These folks I would like to tie to a tree and not give water or food... It really steams me up...

Now for the farm part of this.. The people think it's okay to think... Hey heres a thought I am gonna drop my cat in the middle of the country and hope he has the sense to wander to a house and find food! MY House raised.. can food spoiled Never seen a mouse in it's life can't can't pee on anything but litter use to 70 degrees year round cat off in the middle of NOWHERE and count on someone else to feed it CAT... WHAT THE FUCK ASSHOLE!

Not only that but They think like this... I think I will toss 3 8 week old kittens out at the same time and hope they can get a clue too! FUCKING wow! Why do I say this because we are about 8 weeks away from the onslaught of just that.

One year 5 years ago we had 23 cats show up on our door step of all ages and they were NOT OURS... They were not tiny farm cats that lovely or one of ours had one was even placed on the door step in the snow with foot prints! That took balls.. Thanks for thinking of us ASSHOLES but the shelter was 4 miles away!

No wonder I threatened to shoot someone! Fucking pricks and NOW NOW they think it's a freeway outside of my house from the city to the farm... The farmer can use a new dog.. heh.. he can always use a new cat.. WHAT???? I don't FARM CATS... or dogs.. Take responsiblity you fucks and care for your animals I am going god damn broke trying to care for all these poor creatures and it's breaking my heart!

end of rant.

Sorry twitchy I know you are so responsible and support the shelters so much but owners need to take their responsiblity seriously... I bust my butt doing all I can for them.. it's a shame.

I lived your reality years ago when I had the farm. I even had one Llama dropped off and one Bison dropped off - different years each but WTF? Where do you get a fucking bison? Goddamn fucker was mean too. The ex made some calls and got rid of it pronto. Same for the llama. I wont' keep an animal that spits at me. Sorry.

Shelters are chock full because people think FARMING cats and dogs is a legitimate business. They call them puppy "mills" but they are also farms. The Amish are the prime perpetrators of this awful mess. Missouri just passed into law making it illegal to farm house pets.

Every year I give money to the ASPCA because of the work they do. I get weekly updates on the laws and everything. That's where I get all those alerts I post from.

People will never be responsible. You have ghetto (and I DO NOT want this taken as a racial remark, but this is inner city reality folks) black kids all toting female pit bulls - you KNOW they're breeding them left and right for fighting. The ASPCA is constantly rescuing these poor dogs from rings every day. City dog fights are the hardest to find I think. So many basements to hide in.

People have been dumping kittens by the road, drowning them etc for ages. They dont' think they should spend money on spaying and neutering and they think all cats are not trainable nor should be kept inside. A recipe for disaster all the way around.

VETS - vets are a big part of this problem. I understand they need to make money. I understand they have huge liability and malpractice insurance premiums but I don't understand charging $500 + for spaying or neutering. I personally feel the vets should give this for well under $100 and I would also say that euthanasia should be for cost of chemicals only as well. Veterinary visits are costing way too much and people are saying, "it's just a cat, dog, hamster" and I just wont' pay that price." Or in tough times, people make the choice of not taking care of their animals at all.

Then you got the mentality of "It's just an animal." That is the worst crime of all in my mind.

Barb, you need to post signs not to drop off animals and get a camera system with a DVR to record and get who is dropping off on film and then go beat them with a bat upside their head. I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be the shelter or a private foster home that gets overwhelmed on occasion and feels you should help.

Is there not a law like we have 'a duty of care' ?

I've just been researching the law for the rescue centre I started helping with. We legally have to ensure the welfare of any animal put up for adoption now.

RE: to my horror... - Twitchin Kitten - 12-28-2010

No, there are no such laws like that here. This is why organizations like the ASPCA have such a hard time.

For example: farm animals must have food, water and shelter on the property here in NJ, but there is no such provision that you MUST give these to the animals you keep. You'd think it would go without saying.

Each state's animal welfare laws are different too. There are too many loopholes where these abusers get around this stuff too. If you look at the advocacy alerts I post, there is one with a victory where one state ( I think NY) now has a registry for animal abusers who have been convicted. We need more like this.
