Remember the Rescue Home? - Rhubarb - 11-03-2010 Last month I went to check out a house where the family had set up a rescue centre for piggies and rabbits. I wasn't too impressed. I decided rather than going to the RSPCA- which really would not help the problem I offered my services of labour and sourcing materials. It was 'sort of' accepted and although Sarah agreed help with cleaning would be useful she wouldn't not come out with what she was short of. Then last week she agreed I could go over and help with her pregnant intake. I decided to text her before I went over to check it was still ok and what to take. She phoned me straight back and said she didn't want me to go over. It turned out she suspected I was working for another rescue centre who she doesn't get on with. I was totally honest and told her about my friends in Crawley who in turn did know the centre Sarah had fallen out with. I don't know any of these people (only Liz). So all ends well. I got lots of cuddles on lots of piggies (about 30!) and I cleared out the girlies for Sarah while she got her son from playgroup. We agreed 5 were pregnant (one very soon because she was so grumpy and at best a sack of potatoes about to pop). She finally came up with requests and called me today to thank me for the things I left I thought she could make use of and asked if I'd be there next week? Cuddle those babies- wouldn't miss it! I found a newsagent willing to give us left over newspapers and my mum's church is going to put out an appeal for bedding. Now I need to find some wire and lino, wood and tarpauling. Ideas? RE: Remember the Rescue Home? - Twitchin Kitten - 11-03-2010 What kind of wire? Wire mesh? Ask around at fence yards (fencing businesses). I bet they'll let you rummage through their scrap bins. Lumber yards for wood. They too have scrap bins of things they discard. Sometimes an appeal for a donation with a promise of free advert (Wood donated by, Smitty's Lumber) sometimes gets you lots of stuff. RE: Remember the Rescue Home? - Rhubarb - 11-04-2010 I thought along those lines. Sarah said she needed new flyers so I suggested anyone willing to 'sponsor' should be mentioned on any flyers. She called to tell me one of the babies I found with diarrhoea had died over night. RE: Remember the Rescue Home? - Twitchin Kitten - 11-04-2010 Aww, he was probably so sick he wasnt' absorbing any nutrition for awhile. Poor thing. RE: Remember the Rescue Home? Update - Rhubarb - 01-02-2011 New Year New Broom. I took a chance today by blowing my cover as Cavy 007. Yesterday Mark and I went over to catch up with the Rescue and I told Sarah my friends who live in Surrey were coming to visit family and once again they offered space in their 'hospital' for any really poorly piggies. This time Sarah decided to decline the offer to my dismay. She decided they were supported by another rescue centre who berated Sarahs ethics. So I called my friends to tell them the situation. They asked what could they do? We decided to call at the centre today regardless and as it happened the family were still in bed after a very late night, which gave me a singular opportunity to show them around, meet the sows and the ones I felt needed medical care. Sarah appeared very nervous about the 'visit' and As I assured her Liz and Lynn were here not to pass judgement but to offer extra help. I suggested Sarah took them off for a cuppa of tea and I got on with my favourite job, cleaning out and getting cuddles. An hour later Liz came to say goodbye and in her hand was a carrier with the 4 little girls in need of care. Success! A link with another rescue centre and another maybe on the cards too from Reading further north who is in email contact at the moment with a possible help with medical supplies! The bomb shell (or dead-line) is to get the rescue down to a minimum with an army of helpers by August. Sarah is pregnant. RE: Remember the Rescue Home? - Rhubarb - 05-18-2011 A little update. I'm still going over to the centre every Tuesday, except I got a text this week to ask if I'd go over friday, which I can. Almost all of the piggies and rabbits have been homed! It is great news. There is one pregnant sow and about 8 pairs of boys and 9 rabbits, which is a great drop in numbers since I first went there when there was 200 in the garage. The garage only has straw and hay in it now. i do wish i could get Sarah to not use straw. I'm sure that is why many of the piggies get mites. |
