The Kitty Litter Thread - Twitchin Kitten - 10-31-2010

OK as promised to Havoc yesterday, I'm posting my kitty litter set up. I think I did some photos in the pointless thread but I am not slogging through those pages looking for those images again.

Sorry that some of the images are blurry, I was rushing. But, you can see well enough.

I've switched from clumping litter and am completely happy with the switch.
I've tried the LitterMaid and that is totally useless unless you have one tiny cat.

Clumping litter was the best thing out there for awhile but I found it does not keep the odor down when you have multiple cats, EVEN AS LITTLE AS TWO, and it lets clumps that are repeatedly peed on (in corners) before you get to scoop it out (who's home all day to scoop?) stick to the bottom of the pan causing it to decay the plastic, and hold the stink in there as well. Cost effectiveness was also an issue. I was buying 80 pounds of litter a week at $16+ per 40#.
I was also using 3 boxes for 4 cats.

It was becoming a nightmare. There is no such thing as trackless litter. I need to purchase one of those astro turf mats to bring down the tracking from this but in the meantime, it's really not that bad. I'm on top of it all day long too.

OK This pine stuff started when I tired the newspaper pellets. I like those too but the stink tends to come through overnight. Overnight is the big problem now, or an extended time out of the house.

The pine is virtually odor free. I scoop the poo out as needed and when the pellets are all 'expanded' it's time to swap out the contents.

This is the product I use. There are two brands of pine litter. I've tried both and this one is cheaper and works best for me. Cost: $13 / 40# bag.
I'm using ONE big box for 6 cats.

This is what I wake up to in the morning. The tracking is not that bad for 6 cats tramping in and out all night.
This is also what it looks like when it's time to change the contents.

This is what this dirty box looks like BEFORE I wipe it down and put new litter in it. Pretty damn clean for a filthy box!

And this is the tiny amount of litter pellets needed to start. Any more in there and you get too much expanded litter. I also get about 4 days out of this with 6 cats.
There is virtually no stink.

Why do I imagine cats waiting in line at the box?

Julie and Chloe use yesterdays news and we all like it very much, they track almost nothing into the house. 2 boxes, 2 cats, the boxes are out there somewhere and somehow after I buy the litter the boxes get cleaned and the litter gets changed. It's like magic I tell ya, magic.

I think this is a first for me posting in a kitty litter thread. It is getting cold out and my cat is starting to use his powder room. (His nuts are gone that is why I say "powder room") It gets changed about once a week and really does not smell. I need to get a new one soon this one is about 3 yrs old. I was thinking of painting pictures of female cats inside it. Maybe a picture of a few frogs.

Put some graffiti in there too, like Mice taste like shit, and Fido licks his own balls.
