2010 Hurricane season - LKTraz - 08-26-2010

Ok so it officially began on June first and we have had a couple develop to date but the season is really becoming active this week.

In case you didn't bookmark the page or lost the link for tracking the storms through the National Hurricane Center branch of NOAA......here it is.

Noaa National Hurricane Center

I've always been fascinated with meteorology and in particular, severe storms. Hurricanes, tornadoes, ice storms and blizzards all grab my interest.

At present we have Hurricane Danielle (category 2 bordering 3) and tropical storm Earl active in the Atlantic with a strong chance of another one forming off of the African coast.

In the Pacific there is Hurricane Frank (category 1).

Saffir-Simpson Wind Scale:

Category One Hurricane (Sustained winds 74-95 mph, or 119-153 km/hr). Very dangerous winds will produce some damage.

Category Two Hurricane (Sustained winds 96-110 mph, or 154-177 km/hr). Extremely dangerous winds will cause extensive damage.

Category Three Hurricane (Sustained winds 111-130 mph, or 178-209 km/hr). Devastating damage will occur.

Category Four Hurricane (Sustained winds 131-155 mph, or 210-249 km/hr). Catastrophic damage will occur.

Category Five Hurricane (Sustained winds greater than 155 mph, or greater than 249 km/hr). Catastrophic damage will occur.

Bring it on.

RE: 2010 Hurricane season - LKTraz - 08-27-2010

Danille is making rapid gains in strength. As of this post it is now a solid category 3 with 120 MPH winds.

The current predictions are that this will be a category 4 storm with max sustained winds at 135 MPH as it passes approximately 100 miles to the southeast of Bermuda around 8 PM tomorrow night.

RE: 2010 Hurricane season - Rhubarb - 08-27-2010

I'll call Sara and see how she is. She lives in Bermuda and usually comes home during a hurricane if she can escape in time.
This one sounds ok for her at the moment though.
Thanks for the link.

You and my daughter would have been best buddies - weather was all she talked (and stars and Minis and Renualt!)

So far every hurricane has stayed in the ocean and Danielle is expected to do the same.

There's a 3-fer on this - Earl and Fiona are right behind it.

This is the reason I have a friggin headache all week.

RE: 2010 Hurricane season - LKTraz - 08-27-2010

Well actually as of yet Earl is still a tropical storm and Fiona has yet to become organized and so the system MIGHT become a named storm.. Currently there is a 70% probability of Fiona reaching hurricane status.

Earl is rushing along at 20 MPH forward speed so is not likely to intensify much more and will probably take a similar track as Danielle unless it slows down.

What may become Fiona however is moving slowly which will allow for better organization and also may send it on a more southerly track possibly impacting the Bahamas, Hispaniola, Cuba and Florida.

In the Pacific, Frank has weakened back to tropical storm status and is likely to fizzle over the next 24 - 36 hours.

Danielle is now a category 4 with sustained winds of 135 MPH.

I was on Guam for 15 months and lived in Fl for 6 and a half years and didn't own shit in either place except maybe a car and some furniture. You would have thought the we could have had at least one good hurricane or typhoon while I was in either place. You know, just so I could say that I was in one. It would have been perfect, I had nothing to lose but the very little bit of shit I owned.

Bah, it's not so exciting. I lived through Gloria and a couple of others when I lived in NY.

Cherry point Nc was a blast during hurricane season years gone by I sat through a couple of the little ones but Charlie scared the wits out of me.... Danielle has plenty of potential still I wonder what she will do tomorrow.

RE: 2010 Hurricane season - Twitchin Kitten - 08-28-2010

I find them a terrible disruption to my day.

Gloria washed up a manhole sized snapping turtle into the street though. Poor guy almost got hit by a car so we grabbed a snow shovel and shoved him back to the swam behind the house.
