Would vaseline ruin them? Try that if it won't.
That's odd that it didn't last so long. I had good success with it on the bike.

once I get all the crap off I'm going to keep them in a tub of mineral oil, or WD-40 until I can get the stuff to do the patina.

I know you are probably not looking to spend money on them, but....something like this might do the trick. http://www.eastwood.com/eastwood-s-fast-etch.html
A good acid bath then light oil would keep that rust at bay.

I'm willing to spend money if i ever get any. Dont want to leave it coated in zinc though, I may just get the dissolver from there.
