RE: Musical Who Am I/Are We - Jilly - 01-11-2012 I`ll do one then....A nice easy one ! Irish singer /songwriter . Has performed with Brad Paisley. RE: Musical Who Am I/Are We - LKTraz - 03-21-2012 Since we have a different slate of active members from when this thread was last active, let's give it a bump and see if there's interest. Let's not be too rough to (re) start. This guitarist is considered to be the father of the heavy metal sound because he was the first to use an alternative tuning. RE: Musical Who Am I/Are We - Twitchin Kitten - 03-21-2012 Jimmy Page. RE: Musical Who Am I/Are We - LKTraz - 03-21-2012 Not Mr Page. He used standard tuning. RE: Musical Who Am I/Are We - Twitchin Kitten - 03-21-2012 Yeah but it was HIS playing that coined the phrase heavy metal. This person IS a contemporary to Page but think HEAVIER and much darker than Zeppelin. RE: Musical Who Am I/Are We - Twitchin Kitten - 03-22-2012 Tony Iommi from the original lineup of Sabbath? RE: Musical Who Am I/Are We - Twitchin Kitten - 03-22-2012 A bit of interesting trivia for those who don't know: Tony Iommi had to use an alternate tuning due to the loss of a fingertip. He also fashioned some kind of "skin thimble" to aid in his playing. Dolly Parton "invented" the alternate tuning so she can play with her long fingernails so she can play 'flat fingered' on her left hand. Thanks Matt for that bit of trivia ![]() RE: Musical Who Am I/Are We - LKTraz - 03-23-2012 The person in question is indeed Tony Iommi. The tuning of C# eased the tension on the strings making it easier for him to play with the damage done to his fingers in an industrial accident on the last day he was to work before quitting to become a full time musician. He also used the lightest strings available so as to further ease the tension on his fingers. The result was a unique and very "dark" low tone sound which serves as the template for many of today's heavy metal musicians. The thimbles he fashioned were made from dish soap bottles. Terry Butler also detuned to C# on his bass guitar to match Iommi's sound. Alright TK......your turn. RE: Musical Who Am I/Are We - Twitchin Kitten - 03-23-2012 A pioneer of punk-metal, her stage theatrics included blowing up equipment, near nudity and chain-sawing guitars. |
