They are doing worse than storing your info. They are following you around the internet. YES THEY ARE.
Yesterday I was logged into facebook but on other tabs looking for something specific. Today all over my FB page are targeted ads for the same item I was searching for. This is NOT the first time this has happened. I thought at first it was a fluke, but now not so much. Last time it was banking institutions after I did my account balances.
Log out of facebook - not just close it - fully log out out before you do anything you don't want ANYONE knowing about online. I need to know how they do this.

Nothin much to it they pay sites a small amount to install a script to track browsing and and shopping habbits from your ip address, ghostery helps a little but i cant think of a way to block it completely. Just logging out or not having fb or google open has no effect.
Well a vpn might work.

A VPN wouldn't work either, not in this instance. To completely disable it you have to completely disable cookies, since it's all done via tracking cookies. Also, any site that uses Facebook's own code to install a Facebook button of any type... well... that code has the tracking shit embedded into it. Fuck facebook with a hairy goat cock.

There's even more bullshit going on. A friend of mine was reported on as having a fake name on her personal account. They forced her to change it and demanded proof of identity. Zuckerberg is out of control.

And FB explains it here. If there is so much as a FB badge on a site that says "follow us on FB" I'm betting that puts their invasive cookie on your browser / computer. It also gets them around that EU law about cookie notifications.

Dylan, can you explain if there is an actual difference between putting a cookie in the browser ( which is normal ) and if it's at all possible to put one on someone's computer? If they can actually insert one on the computer, how can one remove themselves?

A cookie is browser only, and usually unique to a single browser. I say usually, because sometimes multiple browsers from the vendor [Firefox and Seamonkey both from Mozilla comes to mind] sometimes share profiles. Chrome/Chromium [Chromium being the completely open source browser that Google Chrome is built on top of] is another example of this. Anyway, moving on from that. It's still an evil fucking cookie. This is why, should I ever use Facebook [doubtful as that is], I'll use a locked down browser for it that gets used for nothing else. That way tracking cookies of any kind can eat shit and die.

Here is the cookie settings in Firefox, mostly default here:

You'll need to change the "History" dropdown to use custom settings as I have. The you can use all these options to set up your browser however you need. The 2 dropdowns at the bottom are the most important usually. Changing the first from "Always" [where I currently have it] to "From Visited". You could use never, but that will disable login cookies for sites such as this as well. In the other dropdown you can change it from "they expire" to "I close firefox" or "ask me every time".
Another thing you can do is use the "Always use private browsing mode" checkbox for ultra-high security settings.
Finally, you can see up near the top that I have the checkbox for "Tell sites I don't want to be tracked" checked. This isn't obeyed by every site, but most legitimate ones will obey it.
I only know Firefox, but I'm sure the other browsers have similar settings. The settings and quality of control in Firefox is why I've always continued to use it, even when Chrome was faster. I'm all about my own control of my life.

OK I just changed it all like yours and I put the Private Browsing thing in place (unlike yours). I checked my exceptions list and the sites there are the ones I visit daily. I then cleared out all my other cookies in the show cookies button. Now I'll see how it takes care of things. Before today I had it set to simply remember history.
