At Crown Court; Judges and Barristers wear wigs and gowns and refer to everyone by surname or status M'lord, Clark of the court, members of the jury, sirs and madams.
So when the most highly regarded and highest legal court, a Coroners Court sits for a Coroners verdict, everyone is dressed in civilian or casual clothes, except the police who are on duty during the hearing.
Put everyone at ease? Guess so.
