I would have squirted a tube of A&D ointment on it to try to plug up the hole and hoped for the best.

No, that photo does not do the damage justice. It wasn't a hole but a huge flap and with his age, heart murmur and all the fatty tumors, cycst and other things wrong with him, it would only get infected and he'd die a slow death from infection. I wouldn't do that to him. That dog's been a good friend and protector and he deserves the best treatment I can give him, even if I have to borrow money to do it.
I know how to suture but I don't have a kit anymore and since my vet is dying of a brain tumor, I can't get lidocaine anymore to numb the area to be stitched.
It cost that much because it was the after hours emergency vet.

I know.....I've spent hundreds on friggin stray cats before, only to have the get hit by a car or disappear.
