Once told after an audition that he didn't make the band because he was too GOOD this bass player went on to play with a very successful 3 piece band and later a collection of not well known but excellent musicians.
Name the bassist and the 3 piece band.

first band that comes to mind is Rush, Geddy Lee. I cannont think of any other 3 piece groups.
