Hey LK - Matt does the security for some performance shops here and he asked them what he can do with our car to 'tweak' it up. The answer was, "Not much but try cold air."

Not knowing what he meant, I looked it up and completely understand what it is now

So, not knowing much about the parts themselves, and not looking to spend $900 (last one on the page) - can you tell me which kit would be the best for my Mustang?

Not sure if we'll buy from these guys but it seems from a quick internet search there is quite a variety out there to choose from. If you have another suggestion, fire away. This looks like something I can throw in myself too.

Note: while looking at that page, take note which ones are for newer than the 2009's and for the GT's. I don't think the ones for GT will fit mine. the pipe looks like a different configuration.

If I need other bits and pieces to go along with the kit or if you think I'll need a pro or good backyard mechanic to tune it up, say so.

Wherever you decide to buy I would recommend going with the K & N kits. You can easily install them with just a few common tools and common sense. Just make sure that you specify your year and engine size and you'll get the correct fit.

Should you need to do any modifications for installing they will be very minor, such as relocating bolts, using washers to make up gap spaces, slightly adjusting angles on wiring or hoses etc. A friend installed one on his Ranger pickup but it wasn't the exact model he needed. (Got it cheap from a friend who wrecked the car before he installed it) All we had to do was cut a small notch in the plate behind the filter to allow a hard line to pass and make an "L" bracket to allow mounting. Only took about an hour including all the modifications/fabricating.

If you have the correct model it should take you about 35 minutes to install.

These little gems do the same thing for modern engines as velocity stacks did for carbureted V 8's. Cooler air is more dense and so you get a better bang for the buck when each cylinder fires.

Depending on exactly where the far end of the intake system ends up, another plus would be to add ducting which would allow the intake point to be more to the front of the vehicle and preferably clear to the grille or outside the engine compartment. Remember Ram Air? This lets "cleaner" and cooler air get to the engine. I have installed "backyard systems" utilizing dryer hoses and even multiple vaccuum cleaner hoses to get this effect without cutting the hood and installing a scoop.

But that would be something to do only if you wanted to eke out every last drop of performance you could get.

mmm a scoop in the hood sounds sweet but I'm not going to go that far.

I think some are set up so that you can put the intake low - like below the engine (hot air rises ) so it grabs cool air too but the ones on the pages I linked don't show that.

They do look easy enough to install too.

Well, we'll be tossing loose change and bills into the "jar" for this toy too. Might even get this before a new stereo for the car.

It's been so long since I had a fast car that I'm so enjoying passing slow pokes and the like without worrying if I have enough room like I do when I drive the truck I think the last car I had that was super fast like this was my Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT. If I can get 50 more horses out of this Mustang it'd be great.

I still don't like the automatic transmission. It 'bangs' between gears when you put the pedal down. I shift smoother and faster on my own. Frankly, the truck shifts smoother with the manual transmission.

Am I the only one still paying $3.79 for a gallon of gas? I'd be happier if my truck actually went a little slower.

I think so man. I paid $3.34 yesterday.

They just keep telling us that we are at the end of the pipeline.
