HMMMM, well, fresh eggs taste totally different are raised on different foods, actually can have no pesticides in them or contaminates, do cost slightly more are more of a hassle but make up for that one case of the shits you get from the commercial egg houses now and then.

Problem is...a matter of preference.... you can't have it all and either way your dealing with shit...

Eggs are nearly $3 a dozen here. Did I mention they eat bugs? And just where is LH since he started this conversation?

We go through about a dozen eggs a day.

It's not just cost, but flavor. Have you ever seen a yolk from a farm egg Twistee? They are almost orange. Much more nutrition in them. I think it would be fun, and if not, chicken dumpling soup-yum yum.Biggrin

I'm not much of an egg eater myself anyway. I do know a couple of guys that sell eggs from their chickens for cheep (he said cheep again) it I really wanted fresh, homegrown eggs, and all the shit and fleas stay at someone elses house.
Yeah Twitch, they eat bugs because they are picking them off of each others backs.

I've had chickens in the past Twist. I never had any problem with fleas and what not on them. Wild birds I've 'saved' gave me more nits and gnats and fleas than any domestic bird I've kept on the farm. Poop was never an issue. I didn't keep enough to have such a mess.

Here I am! I am here! I learned from my pal I will call him "Dark Mark" cuz his skin is dark. Anyways he says they are not bad. He spreads leaves all over a patch about 20x40 and rakes it out every 2-2.5 weeks, the moisture under the leaves draw the bugs and worms up and you should see them go nuts when he rakes it over the hill.
Having 6 hens and one Rooster will get ya more eggs than you can use but its a good mix of bird.
I remember the de-plucker at the chicken factory and can relate to twisties objections of dem nasty birds.
Dark Mark gets about 12-18 eggs every 8 days or so. To me thats alot of eggs.
I forgot to ask him if he slaughters a few in the fall to rotate his stock. I guess there is quite a few guidelines butits not bad after a few years, kinda like a garden.
Gimme dat filet-0-fish............gimme dat feesh.

Rotating those chickens is probably a good idea too, old chickens are only good for soup, tasty, tasty, chicken soup.
