Somewhere around mid May a black chicken simply showed up on the property. No clue as to where she came from but she stuck around.
Soooooo.....we started feeding her and just sort of accepted her as a novelty pet. Maxine took a shine to her "pet chicken" and we named her Nuggets. Yeah I know, we are kinda sarcastically sick here at my house and we joked about getting a few more fowl with possible names like Strips, Drumsticks, Bites, Filet....you get the idea.
In late July we decided to get Nuggets a potential boyfriend. So we went to a small animal auction and bought a rooster for a measly $5.00.
He came home and went into a cage so that he would get the idea of where he lived and until we could build a decent coop and fenced in run area for him (and Nuggets if she would consent to join him).
Cash flow prevented us from getting the needed materials (but in the next 2 weeks we were goint to get the stuff and do it) so the rooster who is now known as Colonel Sanders was still in a cage. He didn't seem to mind and had room to walk and stretch out although I really wanted to get him into a proper coop/scratch yard ASAP.
This week the latch to the cage door didn't get properly secured and the Colonel strolled out.
He found Nuggets and they are hanging out together out back. Friday he decided to come hang around on the front porch where his cage is and stroll around between there and the back yard.
Yesterday he came up on the side deck and was tormenting Rufus (our Rottie) by walking up to the sliding glass door and pecking at it.
This morning......look what I found picking at the cat food bowl for our farm cats:
