Whether this is urban myth or not I'm not sure. I can never trust my dad with his police tales after he took us to see the snow covered round-a-bout just near where we lived one Christmas ( must have been about 5)- He was on night duty Christmas Eve and he whizzed all us kids in the road along with the other bobby he was working with.
There is was sleigh tracks and clove hoof prints in the snow........wow!
An immigrant was arrested and taken to court for stealing Peacocks from a local manor house. He claimed he didn't know it was an offense to take them and was very sorry when he found Peacocks are not wild birds but belonged to the grounds they live in. He was hungry and at home he regularly ate pigeon and wild duck.
The Judge pointed out how grave this charge against him was and usually it would hold a prison sentence. Since he was new to the UK and was not aware of the protection of birds he would let him go.
As the immigrant was leaving the dock the Judge stopped him.
'By the way- what does Peacock taste like?'
The man thought long and hard
'A bit like swan, m'lord'
Prison sentence was issued.
