Well, they need to get their "scared" under control. They, like soldiers, have a very fine tolerance for fucking up.

I am going to come out and say it, especially since ruminating on it while shooting today, and that is for any of us who aren't there, or cops, or any sort of shit like that, I would tone down the criticism, and at least couch it with understanding. They still fucking fucked up, haha, but I am going to avoid climbing the ivory tower to piss on them too much.

I agree they did the best they could do in the situation, I just think someone didnt prepare them properly or enough. Alot of cops claim they have very good muscle memory and are trained for high stress situations I just didnt see it in this case is all I am saying. The breath and squeeze trigger is only meant for beginners when they still have anxiety about just holding a gun still, and it helps them steady their hand. Safety rules are about general gun handling but also in self defense, and is taught in such courses.Even in warfare you want to be cautious of friendly fire and be knowing of whats behind your enemy.

In light of all this hullabaloo, Bob Owens has a suggestion: Should the NYPD Even Be Issued Firearms?.

Quote:The nine civilians shot by the NYPD in a shootout with a man who had just murdered his boss are not happy with the gunfire of the officers in packed city streets:

Quote:Robert Asika was among those wounded, shot in the elbow from a distance of around eight feet by one of the two police officers who confronted Johnson. He accused police of “shooting randomly,” and said he saw at least two others hit by police bullets.

“If you’re gonna aim try and aim perfectly. If you wanna aim at the target, you got to know what you’re doing because it’s the street,” Asika said. “I could have been dead right now. I could have been dead.”

Witnesses and officials are now saying that the shooter, Jeffrey Johnson, never fired at police. He pointed his weapon and never fired a shot. If true, then all nine people wounded can be confirmed to have been shot by the two police officers.

In the comments of another post on this subject at my blog, a claim was made that the NYPD does not issue Tasers to beat officers. If this is true—and it appears to be true with only 600 issued (2010) in a force of 34,500 officers—it is a major failing of the New York Police Department, as even rural small-town police forces issue Tasers to all officers as a matter of course.

It makes good sense too. Especially if you add the litigation from those nine wounded victims, one or more which may have been debilitating.

Even if the officer's had tasers I dont know if they would have deployed them because this guy had a gun drawn, they try to fight fire with fire when they engage someone.

I honestly think that the cops were victims of adrenaline. In any situation such as this it requires extensive and frequent training to even begin to get a grip and remain relatively calm.

As suggested, they need more range time as well as having to go through at least semi-annual Hogan's Alley training. That would go a long way toward mitigating officer's response stress.

Given the situation, it's a wonder that MORE people weren't injured collaterally.
