So, back in '97 I bought my mom a nice bike. Big pink Schwinn beach cruiser. She decided that it's better to let it rot in her yard than ask if I wanted it or give it to some deserving kid. So, I'm taking it.

I'm either going to wait until I get the truck back (still in the friggin' shop) or if I can get both wheels and the handlebar off, I can stick it in the mustang.

It's full of rust. Paint is peeling. Seat is probably dry and cracked. Same for the grips. I'm going to trick it out Pee Wee herman style! It'll be a nice little project over the winter and spring. Hopefully I can find someone who will paint it for me. I'm not going to stick with pink. Barf

How much are you willing to spend on a good paint job?

We have a friend with a body shop. I think I'd like it powder coated if I can afford it. Let's get it home first and I'll post pics for you.

Can't get powder coating done at a typical body shop...

Yeah, sorry for the 'short' answer. Typing on the phone is tedious at best.

I think the body shop Matt knows does powder coating too. But I am going to shop around and see what I can manage. My biggest issue is going to be the rusty rims, sprockets and everything else "shiny" that is now not shiny and instead rusty. Thanks mom.

I think her bike has less awkward handlebars too. The beach cruisers around here have these big assed things that are wide and high. I'll post pics when I get it home.

Naval Jelly works wonders for rust removal/restoration on chromed and polished objects. I'm pretty sure Duro still makes it.

We have a tub of it. It's only good on things that have not rusted and pitted or rusted through. Well, it will work but the damage is already done. I may wind up having to buy new "extremities".

I didn't walk up to the bike and look at it. I saw it from her window, piled on its side in the leaves and other debris she can't be bothered cleaning up. I don't even know if the paint has been compromised. It sickened me to see it like that.

I'm preparing for the worst. Hoping for the best only leaves me sorely disappointed.

I had a frame and fork powder coated for $85, and it looks great.
Never dull is good for cleaning up chrome and stuff.

OK, now for facts, you will spend more to fix this thing up than it is worth, if you just want a cruiser they are cheap and easy to find. If you just want a project and not concerned about the money, go for it. I've done it a couple of times.

Post some pics of this bike when you get it and I'll try to talk you out of it.
