I was just searching for a new laptop for a friend of mine, so I can quickly point to some better deals... most of them running Windows 7. Windows 8 is a serious mistake at the moment because it was focused too much towards tablet computing (hence why Micro$uck is promoting their new tablet so heavy on TV) and leaves a lot to be desired on the desktop.
As for Linux... You can try it without any disruption by using a "Live" CD. This runs the Linux Operating System from the CD without installing anything to the Hard Disk Drive (HDD), and is how I check out different Linux distributions. So... go and download Linux Mint and check it out. If you need information/software on how to burn this correctly let me know.\
Here are some good choices for a new laptop:

I know lots of people say bad things about Acer, but I'm currently using an Acer that I've had for 6 years. I had an Acer before this one as well for 3 years, and only lost it to a lightning strike at my Mom's house. I've put about $50 into this laptop during that 6 years. That's nothing.
Good luck!
