That appears to be an illegally, and ill kept wild animal. I'm betting the noise from the vacuum drove it nuts and the cat is smart enough to know who is causing the sound. I also bet the girlfriend let out an ear piercing scream the second she saw the cat loose, long before it was anywhere near her, further provoking it.
The story tells how people saw the cat miserable in the house, pacing back and forth all the time. It was stir crazy to boot.
Wild animals should not be pets no matter how tempted one might be to want something "cool" as a pet.
