It sounds to me like Magpie is trying to tell you "Mommy, feed me." when he climbs up your leg. My little fella Wombat did that when he was small and I simply picked him off, put him on the floor and gave him the "finger point" (lean down toward the cat and move your finger from pointing up to pointing between their eyes) while telling him "NO". It took about 2 weeks or so but he got the message.
I've found that "the finger point" works because it resembles the movement a mother cat makes when she will bat at a kitten to correct it.
