Equine trivia: Mares were preferred over stallions or geldings during war because they are less skittish. They will go above and beyond what most of their male counterparts will voluntarily do. It's a rare stallion - or movie stallion - who does all those heroic antics that seem too good to be believed. Mares tend to be more level headed and when you see a pack of wild horses running from something, that lead horse is always a mare. The stallion brings up the rear.
