SPEAKING PENNSYLVANIAN

Once a Pennsylvanian, ALWAYS a Pennsylvanian!

About Pennsylvanians:

You've never referred to Philadelphia as anything but 'Philly' and New Jersey has always been ' Jersey .'

We don't go to the beach; we go 'down the shore.'

You refer to Pennsylvania as 'PA' (pronounced Pee-Ay).
How many other states do that??

'You guys' (or even 'youze guys', in some places) is a
perfectly acceptable reference to a group of men and women.

You know how to respond to the question 'Djeetyet?' (Did you eat yet?)

You learned to pronounce Bryn Mawr (Brin Mar), Wilkes-Barre (Wilks Barry), Schuylkill (School kill), Tamaqua(Ta ma kwa), Kutztown (Ya just gotta know this one), Tunkahannock (Ton can uck), Bala Cynwyd( Bal a Kinwood), Duquesne (Do kane), Monongahela (Sound it out...really!) and Conshohocken (Con sha hock in).

And we know Lancaster is pronounced Lank-ister, not Lan-kaster.

You know what a 'Mummer' is, and are disappointed if you can't catch at least highlights of the parade.

At least five people on your block have electric 'candles' in all or most of their windows all year long.

You know what a 'State Store' is, and your out-of-state friends find it incredulous that you can't purchase liquor at the mini-mart.

Words like 'hoagie,' 'crick,' 'chipped ham,' 'dippy eggs', 'sticky buns,' 'shoo-fly pie,' 'lemon sponge pie', 'pierogies' and 'pocketbook' actually mean something to you. (By the way, that last one's PA slang for a purse!)

You not only heard of Birch Beer, but you know it comes in several colors.

You know the difference between a cheese steak and a pizza steak sandwich, and you know that you also can't get a really good one anywhere outside of the Philly area. (Except maybe in Atlantic City on the boardwalk)

You know that Blue Ball, Intercourse, Paradise, Climax, Bird-in-Hand, Beaver, Virginville, Sinking Spring, Jersey Shore, State College, Washington Crossing, Jim Thorpe, King of Prussia, Wind Gap, and Slippery Rock are all PA towns ... and the first three were consecutive stops on the old Reading RR! (PS - That's pronounced Redd-ing.)

You can identify drivers from New York , New Jersey , Maryland or other neighboring states by their unique and irritating driving habits.

A traffic jam in Lancaster County is 10 cars waiting to pass a horse-drawn carriage on the highway. (And remember ...that's Lank-ister!)

You know several people who have hit deer more than once.

Driving is always better in winter because the potholes are filled with snow.

As a kid you built snow forts and leaf piles that were taller than you were.

You know beer doesn't grow in a garden, but you know where to find a beer garden.

You actually understand all this. It's scary, isn't it!

YEAH! THAT 'S GOOD OL' 'PA' AND WE LOVE I T !

Were the people that came up with those for town names just clueless, or so horny it actually sounded like a good idea?

There's a guy in my corp (eve) that's from PA, had to learn all this because he's a fleet CO and i had to know wtf he was saying at least half the time.

About Pennsylvanians:

we say the same thing in NY and NJ

We don't go to the beach; we go 'down the shore.'
said the same in NJ and NY

You refer to Pennsylvania as 'PA' (pronounced Pee-Ay).
How many other states do that??
again, same in NY and NJ

'You guys' (or even 'youze guys', in some places) is a
perfectly acceptable reference to a group of men and women.
Ha! You stole that from Brooklyn!

You know how to respond to the question 'Djeetyet?' (Did you eat yet?)
Again, you dirty thieves! Brooklyn! and the correct reply would be: NoD'jew?

You learned to pronounce Bryn Mawr (Brin Mar), Wilkes-Barre (Wilks Barry), Schuylkill (School kill), Tamaqua(Ta ma kwa), Kutztown (Ya just gotta know this one), Tunkahannock (Ton can uck), Bala Cynwyd( Bal a Kinwood), Duquesne (Do kane), Monongahela (Sound it out...really!) and Conshohocken (Con sha hock in).

you can only purchase alcoholic bevs in a liquor store here too. Not even beer in deli's or supermarkets

Words like 'hoagie,' 'crick,' 'chipped ham,' 'dippy eggs', 'sticky buns,' 'shoo-fly pie,' 'lemon sponge pie', 'pierogies' and 'pocketbook' actually mean something to you. (By the way, that last one's PA slang for a purse!)
pocketbook is NY. thief!

You not only heard of Birch Beer, but you know it comes in several colors.
I love Birch Beer! We used to pull the bark off the trees and suck on it for the flavor!

You know the difference between a cheese steak and a pizza steak sandwich, and you know that you also can't get a really good one anywhere outside of the Philly area. (Except maybe in Atlantic City on the boardwalk)
Nono You don't eat anything off the boardwalk unless you have a hankering for the explosive shits! And I make the best cheesesteaks period! Pizza steak is disgusting.

You can identify drivers from New York , New Jersey , Maryland or other neighboring states by their unique and irritating driving habits.
Funny we say the same about you! :p

A traffic jam in Lancaster County is 10 cars waiting to pass a horse-drawn carriage on the highway. (And remember ...that's Lank-ister!)
Ok don't laugh but I've been known to block two lanes to give the poor horse a break.

As a kid you built snow forts and leaf piles that were taller than you were.
Didn't we all?

You actually understand all this. It's scary, isn't it!
Yup! wot

YEAH! THAT 'S GOOD OL' 'PA' AND WE LOVE I T !

Vizzy,

Blue Ball, Intercourse, Paradise, Bird-in-Hand and Virginville were all named by the Amish. All but Virginville are in Lancaster County. Virginville is in Berks County (Reading).

RE: SPEAKING PENNSYLVANIAN - BarEdul - 01-06-2010

chuckles... only fun in pa is to pass a buggy and see how the horse reacts... unless a kid is driving...

Oh have you ever seen an 8 year old girl driving a team of 8 while plowing up the ground? Only the amish give such a child that chore... you better toughen up in pa or you'll find yourself beat up by an amish child.

RE: SPEAKING PENNSYLVANIAN - Twitchin Kitten - 01-06-2010

BAH! Let me catch somone fucking with a horse and they'll be fearing me right quick. I used to raise Standardbred racehorses and it kills me to see these poor retired animals at the hands of the Amish.

I know (knew) plenty of Amish up close and personal and believe me, not all of them are the beacon of goodness and light they try to make you think they are!

Yes I've seen that very same 8 year old child driving a team plowing a field.
