Bertie and Iris - Rhubarb - 01-29-2014

Photo's to upload when time allows.
My part in helping at the rescue is taking in troublesome boars- if they find a friend they become settled and everyone is happy.
It is very hard to re-home boars.

Bertie I've had for 4 years or there abouts is struggling with his weight having dropped half his weight since September 2013. He weighed 550gram on Tuesday at the vets.
Although he is an Alpha male (a lone pig) Liz the vet felt he needed guinea pig company more and less human since we couldn't give him 24/7. There is also clearly a medical issue still yet to be resolved if ever Aww

So-
He can't go back to the shed, it's still too cold and he cannot keep warm.
He will not share a pen with another adult male.
He cannot share (will not) share with a baby male, too ill to have an ADHD piglet and doesn't like babies.

Go to Sarah with him for an idea what to do-
I come home with Iris.

She's a timid 3 year old and as it appears (at the moment) Bertie is aware she is a sow, but, he either doesn't care and he isn't interested.
Iris came straight in and looked round and made a nest of hay for them both to sleep in, washes his face (he wishes she wouldn't).

The down side is Bertie is a little nervous around her since she is bigger (not by much) and she doesn't appear to let him into the nest straight after she gets in there, he has to make a couple of attempts before she chirps and he wriggles in. At least she does cuddle up to him to help keep him warm!

Oh! She can fight her way out of a paper bag too, which is more than can be said for Bertie.

Let them be. They are working out the social order and who's boss. Apparently it's her and he has to learn to respect that. He's been labeled "a loner" and given that stay solitary status for so long he needs to learn to adjust.

Just keep watch and see what happens. The only other alternative I can think of is get a larger cage for him and split it down the middle with wire so they can be in company but not able to maul each other.

When do we get to see photos nowww Biggrin

RE: Bertie and Iris - Rhubarb - 02-06-2014

These photo's are hard to get!
I need a professional wild life cameraman.
They spend ages in brown paper bags sleeping or eating.

Will knuckle down to it this weekend

Trudi, show them guinea pig lips! Smile

They are too cute. Looks like Bertie is adjusting nicely to Iris.
