Cool Spins for Graphic Design, Musicians, Robotics, Electronics, and more - ralgith - 07-02-2013

Ok, everyone here knows I'm a big time computer Geek who pushes the Linux OS... a lot.

Well, I'm going to push Linux again, but please read on since this doesn't require you to install anything!

Today I'm going to talk about Fedora Spins. All of the Spins utilize what is known as "Live OS". Which means you can burn them to a CD or DVD (depending on the iso file size), and then reboot with the disc in the drive to run the OS. It runs entirely from the CD, so all of the data on your HDD (Hard Disk Drive) remains untouched. Of course, if you want to save anything you do have the option of saving it to your HDD. For other options, see the Advanced section at the end of the Spin list.

To burn these ISO files correctly you need to use your burning software's "Burn Image" feature, or download and install ImgBurn.

The first Spin on the menu for today is the Design Suite.
The design suite includes a full set of graphic design software, from 2d image manipulation to full on 3d animation.

Our next Spin on today's menu is a new one called Fedora Jam.
This spin contains a great number of applications geared towards the musician - looking at you LKTraz - for audio creation, mixing, and more. So, if you're musically inclined, give it a look. And since it's a LiveDVD... why not give it a "spin"? Wink

The next menu item is the Robotics Spin.
This is one of Fedora Linux's oldest spins. It contains virtually any tool you could possibly need for creating robots. From PIC programming to CAD software for designing the physical form of the robot.

The Electronics Lab is next up on the menu.
This Spin contains all of the software you need to create custom electronics from CAD style circuit board design to IC (Integrated Cicuit) virtualization & testing.

Fedora has many other Spins such as Sugar on a Stick aka SoaS, an educational tool; Games, which highlights and showcases the best in Linux gaming; and several desktop environment spins to showcase all the different ways you can make Linux look and act in terms of a graphical user interface.

Advanced
In addition to just burning these iso files, they are all what is known as a "Hybid-ISO". This means that you can also dump them to a USB stick to run as a LiveUSB (just like a LiveCD or LiveDVD when the computer can boot from USB). Fedora provides handy instructions for that.

You can also install any of these Spins as full blown Fedora Linux installaions on almost any PC from either a burned CD/DVD or from a LiveUSB stick created as indicated above.
