New house! - SarahK - 11-25-2009 We've been in Adelaide for 6 months now and we've finally bought a house Unfortunately, we had to move away from the coast, but ya can't have everything. Settlement day is Friday, we plan to move on Saturday, though we have the lease on the apartment for another 2 weeks. Brian (hubby) is up to his eyes in work - its summer here and busy season for an Air conditioning engineer! So I don't know how we're gonna mangage the move, since he needs the van for work I can't start moving without him. But still, once it's done, we'll finally have our own place - we've waited so long for it! We are settling in quite well, though I suppose we'll be starting all over again, with moving to a new neighbourhood. And I still haven't got a job - I've been refused from Mcdonalds - yeah, thats right, not even Mcdonalds will hire me - thats depressing! RE: New house! - Twitchin Kitten - 11-25-2009 I was wondering about you lately! Congratulations on your new home. You will provide photos once you're settled! You will never get a job at McDonalds, you're over qualified. Sarah, have you ever thought of going into business for yourself instead? Hook up with a caterer and provide the breads and desserts. There are many "home catering" businesses that operate right out of everyday family kitchens. I was actually thinking of doing this a couple years ago because of how I love to cook. RE: New house! - Rhubarb - 11-25-2009 Congrat's on the house. Don't dispair you'll find your slot out there eventually and MacDonald's is not for you. My cousin worked for them in the US and it did his head in. The girl I worked with when I started in my job moved out to Perth 18 months ago. She wasn't too keen to go but her husband was desperate to live there, eventually he secured a job (his age was was starting to go against him). She didn't have job, although she was promised something by Clinque, they just gave her part-time jobs covering other consultants in department stores. She was making no friends. Then she got a job in a nearby chemist. We got a faxed early one morning asking for her references! She has just won consultant of the year. Her husband? He is doing exactly the same as he was doing over here, block paving and plastering- and moaning because it has been the wettest in Perth for 94 years. He did nothing but moan about the rain here. So no change there. He had wanted to go into building houses. So there! Don't give up RE: New house! - SarahK - 11-25-2009 I have thought about doing my own thing - but it'll mean no animals in the house - and I'm not willing to do that! The whole reason for buying our own place was so we could have animals again! There is no way to close the kitchen off from the rest of the house. I've pretty much given up on the whole bakery thing - it's just not happening - they do an apprenticeship over here, so even with my Degree, I don't have the practical skills they are after - so thats 3 years of college down the drain - I have even jiggled my resume expanding the management side of the degree and tried for jobs on that side of things, with no luck. Not even a temp Christmas job - no one will even give me an interview. I have applied for a short course in Animal studies in January - though at the moment we can't really afford it, I'm running out of options. It seems that with out Aussie references and experience they won't even consider me. I feel so guilty - Brian is working all hours - not because we're short of money, just because its the busy season - and I'm sitting around with nothing to do! RE: New house! - Twitchin Kitten - 11-25-2009 That stinks they regulate you having pets for cooking in the home! What if you set up the basement and kept pets out and baked there? You wouldn't have these issues here. What about pet sitting for others until something comes along? Or do they regulate that up the wazoo there too? RE: New house! - SarahK - 11-25-2009 We don't have a basement! I am considering the pet sitting thing, there are a few agencies that you can register with, locally. How do you thing that would work with cats? As you know, I'm planning on getting 2 kittens, once we're set up. I can't imagine they'd appreciate a strange dog bounding into they're life every few days!! RE: New house! - Twitchin Kitten - 11-25-2009 You don't bring the animals to you for pet sitting! You go to them. That's the beauty of it. The animal stays in his own home, comfortable and you go to the house twice a day to walk the dog and sit with them etc. this link on Amazon.com has a couple of books that may help you - The first one I have already. The only thing that stopped me was that I would not be able to travel for holidays with that kind of commitment. At the time I wasn't ready for that. Of course if you build up a large business, you'll be able to hire people to work the days you don't want to. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_2_22?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=pet+sitting+for+profit+by+patti+j+moran&sprefix=pet+sitting+for+profit RE: New house! - LKTraz - 11-25-2009 Congrats on the house Sarah! As far as employment, think unconventionally and business opportunities will present themselves. You just might be pleasantly surprised at what you can cook up that will work well! RE: New house! - SarahK - 11-26-2009 I don't have a car - cant get a car till I get a job, cant get a job till I have a car (starting to sound like an Alice Cooper tune!lol) The pet sitting agency is looking for people to look after pets in they're homes. I could do it, but I wouldn't want to upset my own animals. I was thinkin I might work on making cat and dog treats - do you think they'd have the same restrictions about no animals in the house if the food was for animal? Anyway, today is settlement day, so buy tomorrow we'll own a house! RE: New house! - LKTraz - 11-26-2009 I wouldn't think there would be the same restrictions. Check and see, and if not, run with it! |
