Do you think police officers should be allowed to "just qualify" for their guns and the handling of them or do you think they should be required to take yearly courses and tests?

Personally I think if you are charged with protecting the people, and especially in situations like the one here where kids are involved, you better be quite the gunman in accuracy and safety and I would also go so far as to have them trained in stressful situations where they are tested on ability to keep calm and rational and not go out firing wild like that shooting in front of that office building last year where they injured innocent bystanders.

I also think cops should always be physically fit and if they can't maintain a healthy weight they belong in areas where their ability to say, have a foot chase, isn't a factor.

HIGHLAND, N.Y.— A school resource officer’s gun accidentally fired today in a hallway at Highland High School, police and the school district said.

No one was injured.

Highland is near Poughkeepsie.

The officer, Sean McCutcheon of the Lloyd Police Department, was on foot patrol in a hallway when the shot fired at 1:38 p.m., the district said in a statement on its website.

The statement said no students or staff were nearby at the time.

Lloyd police said the incident is being investigated.

McCutcheon is an active-duty Lloyd officer who works in the Highland schools through an agreement between the town and the district, the district’s statement said.

Cops get crisis training, firearm handling, range practice in academy but it pretty much ends there. They qualify every year but the instructors literally tell them just bring me a target with 5 center mass hits, most cops are in and out in 15 minutes. I got this info from a dispatcher that trains with the cops in Somerset co. Most civilian gun owners have better firearm knowledge and safety and are better marksmen then most LEO's.

The guy is probably a shill for the anti gun lobby. firing into the ground so people could say "Look what happens when a gun is in school"

Well I still think cops should be required to take continuing education and practice or sit at a desk.

I agree , they need to be better trained then the average gun owner, and if they cant be they should be behind a desk.

I am more versed with firearms than many cops, and I never had *special training* or all this other *training* everyone caterwauls about (and of which the state can use against gun owners concerning standards). What cops really are is people given authority by the state to enforce its laws. Long story short, the funny thing here is that one of the state's vaunted authority figures is a fuckup while the same politicos will claim I need to hand over my stuff.
