I still don't understand what goes through the heads of some idiot that thinks pyrotechnics are OK indoors. The news this morning said that bouncers were not allowing people out through the fire exits because there's some kind of rule that says they are allowed to do that for people suspected of skipping out on the bar tab.

Seriously? Did they not notice what's going on around them?

Indoor pyrotechnics must be used with VERY STRICT caution! I've done some small stuff like flash pots and you must be very careful with placement and the amount of material in the cans.

I always test outdoors and pay close attention to height and spread then make sure the charges are WELL under what could create a problem. If there's any question at all that they might impinge on a combustible surface then they don't get used.

When incidents like this one happen it's usually that they went for a "bigger and better" effect and pushed the limits too far.

LK, common sense tells me just avoid it indoors. You know these bands are not testing nor are they volunteer firemen like you. This is a huge club that holds like 2000 people in a college town.

Which is more important? The visual effects or people enjoying the music?

Yes but the technicians are SUPPOSED to take the same precautions as I do. Obviously there are some who simply don't and then completely preventable incidents occur.

Pretty much a slam dunk that the patrons SHOULD be the priority here but irresponsible people end up missing that point.

An excellent example of RESPONSIBLE pyrotechnic use is the company who handles the shows for KISS. They have been doing it for decades without incident. Watch any video of a KISS show and pay attention to how everything is set up. They are thorough and painstaking with their gear and safety.

There's been a few occasions where we've left a too crowded bar because if there was any kind of trouble, there would be crushed bodies. I've gotten into that habit long ago and I still stick with it.

Cramming a bar/club to capacity or beyond is a bad deal and unsafe no matter what.

My first thought is Brazil, some other country.....meh, at least they didn't use guns.
Maybe NY can ban all pyrotechnics and make the world safe for all.

Too bad though, for those 245 sorry saps and their families.
