The Hunger Games - Twitchin Kitten - 09-24-2012 OK, two weekends ago I blew through all three books. Pretty intense stuff for a story angled at teens, but it was riveting from the first page to the last. The movie sucked by comparison. They set it up so that if they never make the trilogy it's a "short story" with a finality. The books left you wanting more. There was so much they didn't include and I don't know if it was for time or for what I said above - keep it short and if it bombs, it's final. I felt they didn't explain enough or get into some of the detail of who and why that sets up the relationships between the main characters. The preparations of the contestants was so chopped short it really didn't set up anything for future movies. Twilla was right about not having the same emotion as the books too. It was very flat compared to them. RE: The Hunger Games - ralgith - 09-24-2012 Agreed. I watched the movie when it first came out, then I also blew through all three books (in about 12 hours in fact lol) and I have to say, this is one of those cases where the movie isn't just "not as good", but rather it doesn't even compare. RE: The Hunger Games - Twilla - 09-24-2012 If we hadn't read the books, I think the movie would have been very entertaining but wow, they really let us down on the Rue storyline. I had to put the book down to sob over her death and it just didn't have the same resonance in the movie even though they couldn't have chosen a more perfect actress to play her. But ya know, it's a rare movie that lives up to book fans' expectations. I still can't watch "The Shining", I think Kubrick really fucked up some major parts of the story and casting Shelley Duval RUINED it for me. RE: The Hunger Games - Twitchin Kitten - 09-24-2012 They would have done better with a week long mini-series at two hours an episode instead. Yeah, Rue was cast perfectly. That little girl is adorable. RE: The Hunger Games - AnthonyG - 09-24-2012 All I saw was the movie and it just made me angry that these kids are just forced to brutally kill eachother. RE: The Hunger Games - Twilla - 09-25-2012 That was a major plot point... that and the extremely unfair distribution of wealth. The movie had beautiful and shapely actors playing the parts but the book described the kids from the poor districts as small and thin from poor nutrition and what a glaring difference there was between them and the rich kids from the low number districts. It looked like a fairly even contest in the movie but it most definitely wasn't in the book. RE: The Hunger Games - Twitchin Kitten - 09-25-2012 I think the people in the districts were too healthy looking in the movie too. Know what else they did? They showed an uprising / riot in Rue's district when she died. I do not recall that happening in the book but later on in the story in one of the other books. RE: The Hunger Games - Twilla - 09-25-2012 I don't mind when they move events around. Did you see Winter's Bone? Jennifer Lawrence played basically the same kind of character from the same area but she was a lot more believable. That made her a little dirty and raggedy. RE: The Hunger Games - Twitchin Kitten - 09-25-2012 No , I'll have to look that up. RE: The Hunger Games - Mysticalv - 10-09-2012 I haven't read the books and I'm not sure after watching the movie that I will bother with them. I really wasn't that impressed with the movie. I certainly don't agree with the brutality of the plot and certainly didn't believe the spiel about why the Hunger Games were created. Its just the rich against the poor, really, using the poorer people as their entertainment. Not something I have a desire to read about or watch. |
