Hit a deer today - AnthonyG - 11-09-2011
I didnt know where to post it really so I figured it involved a animal and would be ok here.
A deer decided to run through 2 lanes over a median and into the front of my truck.(twitch you know where this is, it was on county line rd) It was getting dark and didn't even see the deer coming from the woods on other side. The deer didn't suffer and died instantly thankfully, I told the cop I was sorry I couldn't find the outer fender,must be on the road, he said dont worry about it, its inside the deer

Christ. I hate seeing that. Isn't it hunting season now? That's the corner by the Hess station and Bennet's Mills, isn't it?
When I lived there - which was about 1/4 mile from that corner towards Glory's - they used to drive the deer to shoot them. You'd see more car casualties than actual hunting kills. It got to the point where the deer took refuge in my paddocks and I fed them and let them stay there. I didn't allow hunting on the property. Baby horses look like deer to idiots who shoot for the sake of it.
With all the building going on there, you're going to see this more and more. Sad. I can't believe you got part of your fender left into the poor animal.

Your close about to where it was, it was about half a mile before Bennetts mill Rd. I am just glad it didn't suffer, the crap part was I was gonna contact you tonight about figuring out when we should hit the range lol. I guess that might have to be delayed for a little bit more haha.

You hit a deer?
Did you take the front and hind quarters of it at least? I have done with a few deer I hit. Nothing better since it would have went to waste anyhow. Just don't try to gut it out.
I remember one time, this guy in front of me here in Montana on HWY 200, he hit a deer. Anyhow, I drove back that way 3 hrs later and it was all butchered up.

I'm not sure you're allowed to do that here, Gunnen. I've never seen any deer that's been hit butchered up. If you are allowed, I think you'd have to remove the whole carcass right away so no one sees that and freaks out. Remember, we're in a dictatorship here and people are still squeamish when they see a dead skunk in the road. Gotta protect the squeamish.
You should see the freaking out if someone sees a raccoon during the day. It's a major police event. Somehow these morons are under the impression that raccoons are completely nocturnal. Many small critters have been shot by cops just for being out in the daytime and people are scared for no reason. Idiots. All of them.

Depending on the town some pd's have a list of hunters or people that have interest in deer meat. If the deer is still alive they call a guy on the list let them come kill it. They do that to know it's not a old kill and they take the whole deer. If the cop can say he shot it they usually take it that way. In my town, if I wanted it I could have taken it but I know nothing about butchering a deer and didn't have a way to take it.

We have ended up with roadkilled deer in our freezer on more than one occasion.
Throughout most of Pennsylvania the cops and highway workers are actually glad to see someone who will take them. All you have to do is notify the game warden of where you took it from and he will then come over to your place (or wherever you will be butchering it) and examine the carcass. He wants the head and hooves which are frozen and sent to the game commission lab for research and the rest you get to keep. They issue you a "permit" listing where the animal was taken from and to whom it went with an approximation of how much finished meat will be rendered.
That's it! Pretty cut and dried process really.
Many times though, due to where the animal is killed, they end up a "meat smear" on the road. This is why the cops and PennDoT like to see someone get it.
Basic deer butchering is rather simple and easy actually. It's essentially the same as doing a beef steer but on a much smaller scale.
Gut, behead, hang upside down, skin, remove tenderloins from each side of the spine, cut in half down the center of the spine. Remove any damaged portions till you get to solid meat and make your cuts.
There's a few variations on the method but do a search and you will see it's not very difficult and can be done with a good sharp knife, a hatchet and a hacksaw. No real need for meat saws and such but they DO make things a bit easier.

In my state if you hit them you can keep them. If not they go to the soup kitchens.

No1 son thinks you really had a gun under the light and shot it.
When my father in law hit a stag it killed the car! It needed work on the engine, a new bonnet and wing mirror. The Stag continued across the road and into the woods. He then had to call the police to call the Forestry commission to go to the lookout tower to find the Stag and shoot it. He was driving a Merc at the time.
