Helmet Law Ride in NY - Rhubarb - 07-05-2011
Does anyone know about the ride in NY (?) against wearing safety helmets?
No1 son was telling us over dinner someone was killed in the protest when he went over the handle bars and died of head injuries.
If this is true, well.......the protest appeared to have backfired badly.

As far as I know there are helmet laws in NYC and NY State.
Don't know anything about any protests though.

I figure if someone wants to ride with no coconut cover then fine. It's their noggin to split like a ripe melon if they want it to. Typically those who holler loudest for no helmet laws never rode anything but street bikes and mostly didn't begin riding till they were in their later 20's.
Most riders who started off road and at younger ages will opt for a helmet almost without fail. I suppose there is some kind of correlation but I'm just not sure what that is.
Honestly though, maybe helmet laws could be repealed if say insurance carriers would insert some clause that either calls for a higher premium or pays a smaller amount if one is in an accident and is not wearing a helmet. Come to think of it, option 2 would be more realistic since anyone could lie and tell the insurer that "Oh yeah, I always wear a helmet" when in fact they don't.
I know that I wouldn't be here or possibly may have been seriously dain bramaged if not for using good quality helmets.

I wonder if any of those motorcyclist listened to themselves speak and realize what morons they were making of themselves.
The footage also showed half of them so incorrectly dressed too :doh2: untied trainers for God sake!
I felt terribly sorry for the next new item with the motorcyclist rear ended (that amounts for a high percentage of accidents here), the driver got off Scot free having nothing more than his car impounded for no insurance or licence- here he would have had a prison sentence.
The Audi driver that hit Pete just like that had his license taken away for 4 years and a suspended sentence due to the fact it was his first offense.
Mark is from the era of no helmets- I still don't know how he can go without a vizor- he went to work once on his bike on an early shift I was aware his helmet was still on the tallboy- in a panic I threw on some clothes raced down stairs with it to get the car keys are chase him, only to have him coming into the house
'My ears are cold' was all he said and took the helmet. I know he hates wearing it but, rules are rules.

Your rules of the road for bikes is MUCH stricter than here. There is no 'required' dress code, but those with half a brain know to wear leather.

Again, different rules apply here. BUT - all accidents that are a 'hit from behind' case the guy hitting the guy in front is automatically guilty. Usually it's a matter for the parties involved and their insurance companies and often a personal injury lawyer. If it turns out that there is alcohol involved, then the state gets involved.

Same here. I'd much rather ride without a lid than with one. One of the reasons I gave up my bike was having to wear a lid. Since my neck injury, even a half helmet (Legal halfie) with goggles instead of a visor causes me great pain in my neck.
When we went across country or out of state to neighboring states that had no helmet laws, first thing we did was pull over and take them off.
Sadly you don't always have the most eloquent speakers making public comments as to why they should have their way.

Twitch, you have a perfectly good reason for not wearing a nut cover. Your hardware causes you pain and discomfort so it's a no brainer.
As I said before, let the rider choose whether or not to wear one but not without some sort of adjustment in insurance liability if involved in an accident. Kind of a "ride at your own risk" thing. Lower settlement/payment coverage would be the most equitable. If you don't have any accidents then no fault, no foul! You pay the same premium as someone who opts for a brain bucket.
I guess that those of us who started riding off road are so ingrained with the idea of never riding without a helmet that it carries over to street riding. Anyone who would ride trail with no lid is a stark raving lunatic!
As far as proper riding attire, I've seen some real morons out there. Nutcases riding wearing just shorts and sandals!
For me it's hard soled shoes (preferably ring boots), at a minimum a denim jacket and at best leather, long pants (generally decent jeans) and I wear leather gloves just out of that old trail rider habit. I've dumped it more than once on the road avoiding situations and have walked away every time just a bit sore. NO road rash!

I saw a moron yesterday riding, make that a few morons, wearing nothing but tank top, shorts and friggin' flip flops. Full helmet. Why bother with the lid when you're going to peel 90% of your skin off in a fall?
We rode trails without helmets as kids.
I like my leather. In the summer I am grateful for my chaps. It allows me to ride with shorts on and easy on / off of the leather on the legs so I don't roast when off the bike in the summer.
