Ya' think dogs cry tears of joy? - Trouble - 05-20-2010

Every now and then, I'll give my lab mix a bully stick. She's always excited to receive one but as soon as she actually gets it in her mouth, she starts whimpering. She's not crying to go out and bury it (she does that with rawhide type bones but not bully sticks--if I offer her the chance to go out, she won't). She just cries for 3 or 4 minutes and then settles down and chews it.

Any ideas why she would whimper like that?

Yeah, I would think she's just happy, kinda like my cat talking when she is getting brushed.

I don't think they're "tears" in the literal sense but the whimpering is probably her way of expressing happiness. My dogs take things from me and then they play-attack it, then settle in to eat or chew it up.
