The Secret Life Of Roses - takmark - 04-08-2010

There was/is a fantastic musical series made by B.B.C. Scotland, called 'Celtic Connections' Many luminary singer/songwriters from the U.S. who's penchant is the music of America's heartland. (ie, it's early folk & country) have also appeared in this series. Phil Cunningham who's a much loved Scottish traditional musician had written a Scottish air....and he travelled across varying parts of the U.S. to see how musicians would interpret the tune.

Regretfully, I missed the episode to see how the Appalachian version of the same tune sounded. However, I did catch the one where he arrived in Nashville, where he was in the studio with some of the finest recording musicians in the country. It shows here on the video (that thankfully someone had the good sense to submit) that with a slight change in shift, Scottish/Celtic music is very easily adopted, and adapted.

Phil Cunningham knew, Rosanne Cash....and he asked her to write a lyric for the tune. She said she had in her mind it should be written in the manner of a, Robert Burns poem....and she came up with the lyric, "The Secret Life Of Roses" Like all good musicians, Roseanne Cash is an unconscious musicologist...she can hear and draw from all styles of music.

I'm acutely aware this kind of music isn't everyone's cup of tea, but, I do hope you have a listen.

If you travel far or tarry long - away from love and refuge,
If you've lost your way from right to wrong -- still my heart is true
If the seven seas rise up between and you sail to distant wonders
I will wait upon some foreign shore and live on dreams of love

Of all the things I never said and all the hope inside me
I am still the keeper of the flame that will not be denied
There is beauty in the silent bird there is light where none can see it
There is truth where no one says a word there is love for you and me
And the secret life of roses that bloomed out of the sun
Is like the love that I keep for you -- it never will be done
And the stars we wish on up in the sky - they fade into the night
But my love will grow where no one knows
Like a rose's secret life

And the stars we wish on up in the sky they fade into the night
But my love will grow where no one knows
Like a rose's secret life

That was beautiful, Takmark. Sadly the steel guitar ruined it for me.

Have you ever seen the movie with Aiden Quinn called Songcatcher

A good friend of Twilla's & I said the same thing...Beautiful song, but too much lap steel guitar.

If you come back to this thread at a later date, here's the lyric writer singing it with Scottish & Irish Celtic musicians...where the steel guitar takes more of a back seat.

I haven't seen Songcatcher, but I've just watched the trailer. It's one I'll watch out for, as Film4 over here show quite a few of the 'Sundance' movies Good
