A bizarre creature, dubbed the “oriental yeti”, has baffled scientists after emerging from ancient woodlands in remote central China.

The hairless beast was trapped by hunters in Sichuan province after locals reported spotting what they thought was a bear.

One hunter, Lu Chin, said: “It looks a bit like a bear but it doesn’t have any fur and it has a tail like a kangaroo.

“It also does not sound like a bear — it has a voice like a cat and it is calling all the time — perhaps it is looking for the rest of its kind or maybe it's the last one.

"There are local legends of a bear that used to be a man and some people think that’s what we caught," he added.

Now stumped local animal experts have shipped the mystery beast to scientists in Beijing for DNA tests.

Because it's China. Like BS said in another thread, life is cheap there. If they kill off babies with ease animals are even easier.

After they're done torturing it?

Look at that thing, it's all cut up and in a cage too small. It looks like a bear of some sort. Looks like they shaved it or it's got some kind of disease that make it lose its hair.

Who knows what toxic dump the poor thing has been drinking out of.

LC, you got a link to the original story?

It was probably just a picture taken outside of a resturant, there was a population of like 10 million of them but they ate all but this one.

Damn, that poor animal, whatever it is. It's miserable, cramped and definitely looks like it was abused.

RE: WHAT is this? - twisteroo - 04-06-2010

I probably just ate it's brother at the Chinese buffet.

It really does look like it's in a bad way, looks like sores on it's elbows.

Look at the critters face too. Looks like a burn victim. Poor thing.

It appears to be a macropod (same genus as kangaroos).

This might be one of the last of its kind of an un-before discovered population of animals related to the roos or possibly a member of the rodent family like the jeraboa and gerbil.

Either way, the animal deserves a much larger cage for the duration of its captivity and should be studied as quickly as possible then released.

Tagging it may be a good idea so as to follow it and see if there are more of its kind so that we could observe and learn.
