| I've heard that the majority of our oil comes from Canada, which begs the question, WTF?????

| I think we get most of our oil from Venezuela and not Canada. We do get oil from oil shale from Canada I think.

Okay, so if the majority of our oil is NOT from the middle east, how can they have such control over oil prices?
I hate this stuff. I think it's all a big conspiracy for our governmentto get rich, and keep us poor. lol

Because of OPEC.
OPEC is (in simple terms) a group that all oil selling nations belong to. The oile they pump out of the ground goes into one giant pool called OPEC and it gets divvied up to contries who purchase oil as per their individual contract with OPEC.
OPEC itself is divided up into smaller groups handling individual customer countries.
New countries are demanding more oil like China and India. As they develop the OPEC nations should be pumping more in to meet the demand but they are not. They like the profits they are gaining by being tightwads with the oil.
It's all supply and demand. China is growing in leaps and bounds and so is India. They do not practice conservation or use technology to burn clean. They just use and use. They have massive populations, especially China and they are sloppy with technology. So again, supply and demand.
The ONLY contries / governments getting rich of oil is the ones producing the stuff and then only if the government owns the oile wells - like Saudi Arabia and Venezuela.
Venezuela just decided to take over the privately owned wells (USA owned for that fact) and make them the property of the Venezuela government thus Hugo Chavez now is profeting off oil personally because we all know how dictators work.
The American government does not make any money from the sale of any oil and believe me, the USA is not getting rich off oil in any way. It's quite the opposite actually. We subsidize many countries' oil supplies. Look up the Splash and Dash program here.
