For the past week ive been painting a piece of furniture white, now ive still to piece it back together and am worried about the paint being chipped off from putting it together again. Ive out a coat of varnish on to help protect it, is one coat enough or do i need two for full protection?

I just finished doing a table.   I think we but 2 or 3 coats on the table.  But I wanted to make sure we could use the table and not worry about putting glasses on and leaving a mark.    I didn't use paint though.

Hope that helps some.

The trick to keeping paint from chipping is to make sure you don't use the piece for another week to let the paint 'set'. Then put your 'varnish'.

I like to use water based polyurethane. I put upwards of 3 coats on top of the paint and sand between each coat with a super fine grit sandpaper. Each coat must be completely dry before applying the next one.

The level of 'thickness' of the polyurethane and the quality of the brand is what determines how many coats I use.

Oil based Polyurethane will take 24 hours at a time to dry between coats to do right. The water based is fine and holds up nicely. We used the water base on our newly done floors and it's holding up terrific even with those nasty dogs running on the floors!

Ive been using water based paint and varnish.

so far its had 2 coats of paint and one coat of varnish and its still chipping when i lean it against the wall to dry. I think it might just be the wall as i do the painting and varnishing in another room and havent had it stick to the wall.

Don't lean it against the wall to dry.

Leave it for a good week. It has to adjust to the humidity, temperature etc for a good hard finish. That is the 'secret' to a good paint job.
