MOON

(As you may not have heard of it due to its limited release, here's a trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIexG8179K8 )

Anyone who has seen Sam Rockwell in a movie before knows that the man is a competent actor. However, Moon (beyond being a fantastic sci-fi movie, emotionally powerful, with beautiful scenery and haunting music) has proven beyond any shred of doubt that Sam Rockwell is an AMAZING actor.

It's difficult to discuss the movie without spoilers, but the bare-bones plot is that a man named Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) with nothing but the robot GURTY (Kevin Spacey) for company is working at a mining facility on the Moon. He has a 3 year contract, at the end of which he will be compensated for life and can return to Earth to his wife and young daughter. With no live communications due to a solar flare, he is only able to send and receive delayed messages. When he begins to see things in the dark, starting to question his sanity, his entire world and everything he knows comes unraveled.

Kevin Spacey only lends his voice to the movie, so 95% of all scenes are just Sam Rockwell. And he does an incredible job! I cannot think of any other performance to compare this movie to, but suffice it to say that it's possibly the best acting of the entire year.

The emotional range of this movie is very powerful, as well. You literally feel Sam Bell's pain at the separation from his family. The loneliness and isolation are almost tangible they come out so powerfully from the screen. It's truly incredible what 1 actor is capable of portraying from beginning to end.

The musical score consists of merely 1 song, played in varying tones, a haunting melody that you can hear in the trailer.

If you have any interest in watching one of the best acting performances of the past decade, a haunting drama about 1 man who just wants to go home, or a beautifully rendered sci-fi plot that will emotionally drain you and leave you smiling and crying at the end, I highly recommend you check out Moon.

We saw trailers of this on some of the DVD's we just recently rented and thought it sounded an awful lot like 2001, A Space Odyssey.
